Security forces arrested two suspected terrorists, identified as Tariq Sheikh of Azamabad and Riyaz Ahmad of Chamber village, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Police said the operation began with a raid on Sheikh’s house in Azamabad, where he was taken into custody along with his associate Ahmad. During initial questioning, the duo revealed information about hidden arms. Following this lead, police raided Sheikh’s rented accommodation in Jallian village and recovered two assault rifles and ammunition.

Officials believe the seized weapons were meant to be used for militant activities against security personnel and civilians in the border district. The arrests are seen as a major success in disrupting possible terror strikes in the sensitive Rajouri–Poonch belt, which has witnessed multiple militant incidents in recent months.

Why is Poonch important in J&K’s security situation?

Poonch district, located near the Line of Control, has long been a sensitive region due to infiltration attempts and terror movements. Security forces often conduct cordon and search operations here to stop militants from sneaking in weapons or planning attacks.

Officials call it a preventive breakthrough.

Police officers described the operation as a preventive strike that may have saved lives. They added that maintaining strict vigilance in border areas remains a top priority.

The arrest of two terrorists and recovery of arms in Poonch highlights the continued threat of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, it shows how swift action by security forces can prevent violence and protect local communities from harm.
