In a horrifying case from Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district, a 35-year-old woman was brutally killed at her home in Navara village under the Nepanagar police station limits. The accused, Sheikh Raees (42), allegedly attacked Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk with a knife, slit her throat, and stabbed her multiple times, killing her on the spot.

Police say the attack was motivated by Bhagyashree's refusal to convert to Islam and marry Raees, who had reportedly been harassing her for a long time. According to the victim’s sister, Subhadra Bai, Raees had a history of violent behavior towards Bhagyashree, including physical assault and threats. "He kept forcing her to change her religion and marry him. She refused every time. A few nights ago, he entered our house and murdered her," she said.

The police arrested the accused within hours of the murder and have charged him under sections related to murder and atrocities. Additional SP Antar Singh Kanesh confirmed that Raees is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.

The incident sparked strong reactions from the local Hindu community. Protesters, led by activist Amit Varude, accused the police of ignoring earlier complaints filed by the victim. “She had approached the police just three or four days ago, but nothing was done. Now she’s dead. The accused must be hanged,” Varude said, calling it a case of “love jihad.”

Former Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Archana Chitnis also visited Bhagyashree’s family and demanded action against police officers who allegedly failed to act in time.

In a related administrative move, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhagirath Vakhala stated that the authorities had started identifying illegal properties owned by the accused. "He was involved in encroachments and illegal activities. The administration is taking necessary steps," he said.

Conclusion:

This shocking murder has stirred public anger and raised serious concerns about law enforcement’s response to complaints of harassment. As the investigation continues, the victim’s family and community are demanding not just justice, but accountability from those who failed to protect her.
