Bagu Khan, also known as ‘Human GPS’ and ‘Samundar Chacha,’ was killed in a joint operation carried out by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter took place on August 23 during an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) where Bagu Khan and another terrorist were shot dead by security forces after they opened fire on the troops.

Bagu Khan had been active since 1995 and was one of the most experienced and prolific terror facilitators operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He helped terrorists cross the border more than 100 times using his deep knowledge of secret paths through the tough terrain. This earned him the nickname ‘Human GPS.’

A Pakistani identity card recovered from Khan revealed he was a resident of Muzaffarabad in PoK.

Though he was a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, he helped several terror groups by guiding and facilitating infiltration bids across the LoC in the Gurez and surrounding sectors.

The Indian Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps confirmed that the operation was conducted based on intelligence inputs from the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Alert troops spotted suspicious movement and challenged the intruders who fired upon them. This lead to a brief but intense firefight. Both terrorists were neutralized, preventing another infiltration bid.

This successful operation is considered a significant setback to the terror infrastructure in the region. Bagu Khan’s death deals a heavy blow to the militants’ logistical and infiltration networks that have plagued Jammu and Kashmir for decades.

The security forces continue to remain vigilant to secure the LoC and prevent further attempts by terrorists to infiltrate and disrupt peace in the region. This encounter and the killing of Bagu Khan highlight the ongoing challenges and dedication of Indian security forces in countering terrorism along the volatile border areas.
