Social activist, 45, dies after gunmen shoot at him in J&K's Kupwara

The civilian, identified as Gh Rasool Magray killed after a gunman shot at him. The victim received bullet injuries to his abdomen and left wrist.

A 45-year-old civilian has been killed after he was shot at by unknown gunmen near his home in the Kandikhas area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.

The victim succumbed to his injuries during the treatment in Handwara hospital in Kupwara.

The civilian, identified as Gh Rasool Magray, received bullet injuries to his abdomen and left wrist. He has been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to the officials who spoke to news agency PTI, the victim was a social activist, adding that it is not clear why gunmen targeted the social activist.

Security forces, who are already on high alert in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the heightened military activity in the region, reached the location of the incident after receiving information about the shooting.

The motive behind the gunmen shooting the civilian is not known yet.

RECENT TERROR ENCOUNTERS IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR

The latest terror incident in the region has come to light amid the recent spate of terrorist encounters in parts of the Union Territory, following the April 22 Pahalgam attack on civilians, in which 26 people were killed.

On Friday, an encounter broke out in the Guddar forest area of Kulgam district in South Kashmir

Security forces launched a joint operation after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. Two terrorists are suspected of being trapped as the operation continues.

On Thursday, three terror associates linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were arrested at a checkpoint in Bandipora. Security personnel seized a Chinese pistol, two magazines, several rounds, and hand grenades from them in the Garoora Hajin area.
