A shocking incident unfolded at Guru Nanak School in Udham Singh Nagar, Kashipur on Wednesday when a Class 10 student shot his physics teacher inside the classroom by pulling out a pistol hidden in his lunchbox. The victim is identified as Gagandeep Singh Kohli who sustained a bullet injury on his back with the projectile lodged in his neck. He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors performed an emergency surgery to remove the bullet. Dr Mayank Agarwal, who is overseeing his treatment later confirmed that his condition is stable, though he will remain in the ICU for further monitoring.

According to police officials, the student, Samarath Bajwa, had hidden the firearm inside his tiffin and brought it to school after being enraged over being slapped by his teacher during class a few days earlier. The violence erupted just after the mid-morning break when Mr. Kohli was leaving the classroom. Eyewitnesses recalled that the boy suddenly opened his lunchbox, pulled out the pistol and fired at the teacher from behind. The students panicked as chaos erupted in the corridor.

Teachers present nearby rushed in and overpowered the boy before he could run away. He was handed over to the police within minutes of the shooting. The pistol has been seized and investigators are now finding out how the student managed to lay his hands on the weapon. The initial suspicion points to access through family sources or illegal channels. No official confirmation has been given so far. Police have registered a case against the minor under Section 109 of the Indian Penal Code and have referred the matter to the Juvenile Justice Board given his age.

Colleagues of Mr. Kohli and parents of other students have expressed deep shock at the incident calling it an unprecedented and disturbing development.

“Everyone is shaken. We never imagined something like this could happen here,” said one of the teachers.

Authorities have described the case as a grim reminder of rising anger, resentment and lack of conflict resolution among students, coupled with lax access to firearms.

As the investigation continues, the school management has assured that it will strengthen safety measures and extend support to the teacher’s family. Mr. Kohli remains under observation at the hospital while the boy is in police custody. The officials attempt to piece together how disciplinary action in the classroom escalated into a near-fatal act of violence.
