Sir Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor who captivated audiences as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
Neill passed away on July 13 in Sydney, Australia. His family announced the news in a statement, describing his death as “sudden and unexpected” while sharing that he had remained cancer-free following years of treatment for a rare form of blood cancer.
Family Confirms Actor’s Death
Announcing his passing, Neill’s family said: “It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia.”
They added: “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
The family also thanked the medical staff who cared for the actor during his final days and requested privacy.
From ‘Jurassic Park’ to Global Stardom
Although Sam Neill built an acting career spanning more than five decades, he became a global icon after portraying paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993). He later reprised the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

Despite his health challenges, Neill continued acting, attending public events and regularly sharing updates from his vineyard in New Zealand.
