Riots erupt in French cities after France lose to Argentina in FIFA World Cup final

Riots erupted in France after Argentina secured a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout win over France to lift the World Cup on Sunday, Nexta TV reported. Thousands of football fans poured into the streets in Paris, Nice and Lyon after France lost to Argentina 4-2 on penalties in Qatar.

Videos posted on social media showed huge commotion and chaos on the streets even as police personnel tried to maintain the law and order situation. Police officers were being attacked with rocks and fireworks. 

Armed police resorted to tear gas on the streets of Paris after chaos broke out following the World Cup defeat, The Daily Mail reported. Riot cops clashed with fans on the famous Champs-Elysees in the French capital as flares were lit up and fireworks hit the skies after the tense game, The Sun reported.

Several social media users posted videos of the riots in which chaos can be witnessed on the streets of Paris and Lyon as people flee the tear gas shells fired by the cops.

In Lyon, cops reportedly fired tear gas on football fans as violence broke out in the city, the report said.

Around 14,000 police officers were deployed across the country to guarantee security as Les Bleus took on Argentina in the World Cup final, officials told The Daily Mail.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed as supporters draped in flags hurled rocks, bottles and fireworks at cops before they were met with tear gas attacks. Dozens have been arrested in the city, according to reports.
