It looked like a scene lifted straight from a film. A bride in a hospital emergency ward, a groom standing beside her, and doctors and nurses stepping in as witnesses, as a couple from Kerala went ahead with their wedding on Friday after the bride was injured in a road accident just hours before the ceremony.

Avani, who had been travelling with her family for bridal makeup in Alappuzha's Kumarakom at around 3 am, suffered a spinal injury when their car lost control and crashed into a tree.

Local residents rushed the group to Kottayam Medical College, but she was moved to VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi for specialised treatment due to the severity of her injury.

WEDDING SHIFTS TO EMERGENCY WARD

The wedding was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon in Alappuzha. Once the groom, Sharon, and his family reached the hospital and learnt of Avani’s condition, both families expressed their wish to conduct the ceremony at the auspicious time despite the circumstances.

Hospital authorities, after consulting the neurosurgery team, made arrangements for the ceremony to be held inside the emergency department. Between 12.15 pm and 12.30 pm, in the presence of doctors, nurses and close relatives, Sharon tied the knot while Avani lay on a stretcher. The brief ceremony was completed without disrupting patient care.

BRIDE TO UNDERGO SURGERY

Dr Sudish Karunakaran, head of the neurosurgery department, said Avani has sustained a serious spinal injury and will undergo surgery soon. Sharon works as an assistant professor at an engineering college in Alappuzha.

Meanwhile, guests who had already gathered at the wedding venue were served the planned meal, even though the celebrations had shifted unexpectedly to a hospital corridor.
