Heavy rainfall triggered a road cave-in in Uttar Pradesh's Agra on Friday, leading to an unusual protest by Samajwadi Party leader Nitin Kohli, who climbed into the crater using a wooden ladder and claimed he was "measuring" the government's vikas (development). A video of the protest has since circulated widely on social media.

No injuries were reported, as no vehicles were passing through when the road collapsed. Officials, including representatives from the Jal Kal Department, inspected the site soon after the incident. Authorities later cordoned off the affected area and began assessment and repair work.

As repair work continues in Agra and on the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway, the incidents have renewed attention on the durability of recently built infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season. While authorities have initiated inspections and restoration work, the cave-in has also become a flashpoint in the political debate over public infrastructure and governance. With heavy rainfall continuing across parts of Uttar Pradesh, questions over construction quality, maintenance standards and disaster preparedness are likely to remain in focus in the coming weeks.
