A man died on the spot after he reportedly jumped in front of a moving metro train approaching Bengaluru’s Kengeri station on Thursday, leading to an immediate disruption of services on the Purple Line.

Kengeri police arrived at the scene and are working to identify the deceased and determine what led to the suspected suicide. Authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Namma Metro, in a post on X, announced that services between Mysuru Road and Challaghatta were suspended because of the incident, adding that normal operations would resume after clearance and safety checks.

In a separate statement on X, Namma Metro officials expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to commuters. Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving alerts from locals and carried out preliminary checks, dispatching additional officers to secure the area and verify the sequence of events.

The deceased has not yet been identified, though officers estimate he was between 35 and 40 years old. While no identification documents were recovered, police found a mobile phone and some cash in his pocket and are attempting to contact his family through numbers stored on the device.

CCTV footage captured the man suddenly jumping from the platform onto the tracks as the train approached, prompting investigators to conclude that it was a clear case of suicide. Police said there was no indication of foul play.

The suspension of services during peak hours caused significant disruption, leaving thousands of office-bound commuters stranded. Passengers from Kengeri, RR Nagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Vijayanagar and other parts of West Bengaluru were forced to rely on BMTC buses, leading to heavy crowding across multiple routes.

Experts noted a worrying rise in suicides on the Bengaluru Metro network, with five such cases reported on the Purple Line alone in 2024, underscoring growing concerns about passenger safety and the need for stronger mental-health interventions in public transport systems.
