The Centre and the Manipur government have finalised a new agreement with Kuki-Zo groups, reaffirming the state’s territorial integrity ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s likely visit in the second week of September. The agreement was signed today during discussions in New Delhi, with a key provision being the reopening of National Highway-2, which will allow unrestricted movement of commuters and essential goods.

The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has pledged to work with security forces to ensure peace along this critical route. This development follows several meetings between the Ministry of Home Affairs and KZC representatives.

Additionally, the tripartite Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement has been revised. The agreement includes renegotiated ground rules that will be in place for the next year, effective immediately. The revised terms underscore the importance of upholding Manipur's territorial boundaries.

The Kuki National Organisation and the United People's Front have committed to relocating seven of their camps away from conflict-prone areas. This step aims to reduce potential tensions and aid in the peace process.

Moreover, the agreement seeks to reduce the number of designated camps and ensures that weapons are relocated to the nearest CRPF or BSF camps. Such measures are designed to enhance security and stability in the region.

The agreement also involves stringent physical verification of cadres by security forces, aiming to identify and de-list any foreign nationals found within the groups. This verification process is part of the broader strategy to maintain order.

A Joint Monitoring Group will oversee the enforcement of these revised ground rules. Any violations will be addressed firmly, with the possibility of reviewing the SoO agreement if necessary. This oversight aims to ensure compliance and continuity of peace efforts.
