A first-year student at an engineering college in Karnataka’s Kodagu district allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on Wednesday. The student, identified as Tejaswini, aged 19, was enrolled in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning course in Halligattu College of Engineering and Technology in Ponnampet.

A note was recovered from her room in which she had reportedly stated that she was ending her life due to academic pressure. She mentioned having six backlogs and expressed her unwillingness to continue her studies.

Tejaswini was the only daughter of Mahantappa, a resident of Raichur, in northeastern Karnataka. According to sources, she celebrated her 19th birthday with friends three days ago. On Wednesday, she reportedly distributed sweets once again to those who were unable to attend the earlier celebration. She returned to her hostel room around 4 pm after attending her classes.

Around 4.30 pm, one of her classmates noticed that the door to her room was locked from the inside. Despite repeated knocks and phone calls, there was no response. The matter was brought to the attention of the hostel supervisor. When the door was forcibly opened, Tejaswini was found unresponsive inside. The note citing academic pressure was found nearby.

Officers from the Ponnampet police station visited the scene, conducted a preliminary inspection, and are continuing their investigation into the matter.
