A video has gone viral on social media where an under-construction flyover in Nagpur is slicing through the balcony of a residential building. The footage has raised serious questions about urban planning and infrastructure design in the city.

The flyover in question is part of the Indora-Dighori corridor in the city's Ashok Nagar area, currently being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Responding to the controversy, an NHAI official told news agency PTI on Tuesday that the balcony falls under an encroached area. "Our flyover is not inside the outer portion of the balcony. The balcony concerned is part of an encroachment, and we have already written to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to remove it," the official said. He added that the encroachment is expected to be cleared shortly.

The house owner, however, contested the claim, stating that while a rotary beam of the flyover passes through the balcony area, it does not physically touch the building. “It’s passing through a portion of the balcony that has no utility, it’s essentially a no man’s land. The flyover is 14 to 15 feet above, and there is no safety issue,” the resident said.

Videos of the incident, which have garnered widespread attention online, show the flyover's beam uncomfortably close to the structure, intensifying concerns about construction standards and residential safety.

A senior NMC official confirmed that the building was previously leased to the landowner and said the municipal authorities are currently reviewing the lease terms. “Once the lease status is verified, appropriate action will be taken to vacate the premises, following due procedure,” the official stated.

The incident has reignited debate over the alignment of infrastructure projects in densely populated urban areas and the pressing need for clearer land use policies and planning oversight.
