A 29-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Management in Bengaluru (IIM-B) died after he fell from the second floor of his hostel, police said on Monday. The incident occurred hours after the victim celebrated his 29th birthday with his friends on January 4.

Nilay Kailashbhai Patel, who belonged from Gujarat's Surat, went to his hostel room after cutting the cake in his friend's room after midnight, police said. He was later found lying in the courtyard lawn of the hostel at about 6.30 am on Sunday.

It is likely that Patel, a student of Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), accidentally fell from the second floor balcony, while he was going back to his room after the birthday party.

A police officer said it was awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death.

"We are awaiting the post-mortem report, which will likely come in three days, to ascertain the cause of death," the officer told news agency PTI.

Police said Patel was spotted by the security personnel and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. A case of unnatural death was registered and a probe was on.

IIM-B condoled the death of Patel and described him as a "bright student" who was loved by many.

"It is with profound sadness that IIM-Bangalore shares the news of the untimely passing of our PGP 2023-25 student, Nilay Kailashbhai Patel. A bright student, and a much loved friend to many, Nilay will be sorely missed by the entire IIMB family," the message read.
