A 45-year-old doctor, Dr Kiran Honannavar, was allegedly murdered by his wife, Priyanka, who is also a doctor, inside their apartment in Karnataka's Dharwad on Wednesday. The couple's eight-year-old son was also stabbed and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Alerted by neighbours, the police walked into a scene of horror, with blood splattered across the apartment. A video from the scene showed Dr Honannavar's wife lying down and scrolling through her phone while the bodies of her husband and son lay in pools of blood.

After being alerted, Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar arrived at the crime scene, noticed the injured child was still breathing, and rushed him to the hospital.

According to the information available so far, when Kiran's relatives and friends called on Tuesday night and again on Wednesday morning, Priyanka answered the phone, telling them first that he was resting and later that he had gone out on duty.

When family members eventually visited the couple's flat on Wednesday evening after receiving no response from him, they found the father and son lying in a pool of blood, while the accused was lying on the bed, scrolling through her phone.

Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said Dr Kiran Honannavar, an anaesthetist at Chirayu Hospital, lived with his wife, Priyanka Kattanahalli, an MBBS graduate with an MS in Ophthalmology, and their eight-year-old son in a sixth-floor apartment opposite Pavan High School. He added that Kiran's family members used to visit them frequently.

Describing the scene, the Commissioner said police found Dr Kiran lying dead in a pool of blood in one of the rooms. The 8-year-old boy had also suffered stab injuries, he added. "We are yet to ascertain during the investigation when exactly the child was attacked. Since he was still alive, we shifted him to the hospital immediately," he said.

Shashikumar said that the police are trying to establish when the incident took place and what led to it. According to the preliminary findings, only the husband, wife and child were inside the apartment at the time of the incident, and there is no indication so far that any outsider entered the house.

He further said neighbours had been trying to contact the family since morning, but Priyanka told them she was inside the house and that her husband had gone out.

"We will conduct a detailed investigation to determine what exactly happened, whom she spoke to, what she told them, and the sequence of events inside the apartment," the Commissioner said, adding that a murder case has been registered, and the investigation is underway.
