A man was killed after being run over by a Delhi Police vehicle near the Gole Market area on Thursday morning, officials said.
According to police, the incident was reported near the Ram Krishna Ashram Metro Station when the driver of a police control room (PCR) van accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to mount a roadside ramp and hit the man.
The deceased has been identified as Gangaram Tiwari. The victim is learnt to have died on the spot.
Subsequently, the driver of the PCR van, Constable Khimesh Singh, was arrested.
“The driver of the PCR van of Delhi Police accidentally pressed the accelerator, due to which the PCR van, while climbing the roadside ramp, ran over a person, who died. Currently, the police are on the spot and gathering information," the Delhi Police said in a statement.
“There were two people in the PCR Van, including a woman. They were highly intoxicated. My father’s name is Gangaram Tiwari; he was around 50-55 years old. There were bottles of liquor in the car. My father had a shop here for the last 10 years…," the deceased’s son said.“
Soon after receiving the information about the mishap, a police team arrived at the scene. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

DCP New Delhi Hukma Ram said that the family of the victim will be compensated.
“An unfortunate accident took place here. The police are taking action as per the law. We will provide all possible help to the deceased, and compensation will be provided. We will check CCTVs. Further investigation is underway…." the Additional DCP said.
