The vigilance unit on Tuesday arrested Delhi police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Rakesh Kumar while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. Kumar, caught off-guard, threw the notes in the air in a bid to escape the raid on him and destroy the evidence.
The incident happened at Hauz Qazi police station where Kumar was posted. The complainant roped in the Vigilance Branch with a written complaint on the same day.
The complainant, according to a report by the Times of India, alleged that Kumar was demanding money to avoid implicating him in a false case and informed the Vigilance Branch that Kumar called him to Hauz Qazi police station around Tuesday midday to hand over the bribe. ASI Kumar was the division officer of the complainant’s area.
The vigilance team then handed the complainant the currency notes treated with invisible powder before sending him to ASI Kumar.
“The vigilance team laid a trap. They gave the complainant Rs 15,000 worth of banknotes treated with invisible powder. The complainant met Kumar outside the police station at the designated time and handed over the money. After receiving signal from the complainant, the vigilance team rushed to apprehend him," an official speaking to the newspaper said.
The report highlighted that ASI Kumar allegedly sensed that the vigilance officials had gotten whiff of his bid to pocket a bribe. He sensed that a raid was ongoing and quickly tossed the banknotes into the air.
Due to heavy footfall in the area, the people around scrambled to pick up the money but the situation was shortly brought under control. Officials were able to retrieve Rs 10,000 out of the Rs 15,000 and registered a case against ASI Kumar and arrested him.
