The Patna Police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the murder of Advocate Jitendra Kumar Mehta, who was shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday while he was returning after having tea. Mehta, who suffered three bullets, died during treatment.

"Within 48 hours, we have arrested eight accused in connection with Advocate Jitendra Kumar Mehta's murder case. The mastermind of the murder was the advocate's elder daughter's husband Sonu," said Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartik K Sharma. The police have also seized firearms, cartridges, and the stolen motorcycle used in the incident.

According to SSP Sharma, Sonu, whose official name is Mohammad Shoaib, received support from two other men named Akash (aka Kanu) and Mohammad Ali, who helped him orchestrate the crime. The trio hired shooters Niranjan Kumar and Aditya Kumar to carry out the attack.

"On the day of the murder, Aditya shot Mehta three times while Niranjan drove the getaway motorcycle," the SSP said.

According to the police, Mehta was opposed to his elder daughter's marriage with the accused. A few days before the incident, the accused, identified as Sonu, had a fight with Jitendra Mehta after which he planned to kill him, the police said.

Jitendra Kumar Mehta's elder daughter had a court marriage with Sonu alias Shoaib in 2022. Sonu is an AC mechanic by profession while the woman is studying B. Ed. in Hajipur.

"The accused, Sonu, was already married when he had a court marriage with the victim's daughter in 2022. He also has children. According to the daughter, she got to know about his first marriage later," the SSP said.

The couple lived together for some time post their marriage. However, due to her father's strong opposition, she came back and lived at her parents' house. She wanted to work and live together with her husband.

As of now, the police have not found the daughter's involvement in the murder. Further investigations into the matter are on.
