Chennai Bike Taxi Driver Rapes 22-Year-Old Woman, Later Drops Her Home; Arrested

Police said accused Sivakumar took a deserted route, threatened the woman and sexually assaulted her.

A bike taxi driver in Chennai was arrested on Tuesday for raping a 22-year-old woman who had booked his service the previous night. The accused, identified as Sivakumar, was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Police have also seized the motorcycle used in the crime.

According to investigators, the woman booked a bike taxi late on Monday to travel to Pakkikaranai to meet a friend. She asked the assigned driver, Sivakumar, to wait so he could drop her home after her visit.

What do we know about the assault?

Police said that during the return journey in the early hours of Tuesday, Sivakumar allegedly took a deserted route, threatened the woman, and raped her. After the assault, the accused dropped the woman back at her home afterwards.

The victim later informed her husband about the incident, following which a formal police complaint was filed. Based on her statement, the T-5 Vanagaram Police launched an inquiry and verified the details.

“Upon investigation, the complaint was found to be true. A case was registered, and the accused was identified as Sivakumar," a police statement read.
