A man was killed and two women were injured after their scooters were allegedly hit by a "rashly-driven" Porsche near a petrol pump in Chandigarh, officials said on Tuesday.

The horrific accident took place near Sector 4 on Monday night when the luxury car coming from the opposite direction at an "excessive speed" hit two young women on an Activa scooter before colliding with another Activa rider ahead.

According to eyewitnesses, the Activa got lodged into the front engine of the luxury car and was dragged for a significant distance before the Porsche lost control. The car first smashed into an electric pole, then a traffic signboard, before finally crashing into a tree with immense force.

The Activa that was caught in the car’s engine was split into two pieces due to the force of the collision. The Activa driver, identified as Ankit, a resident of Nayagaon, succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The two young women, identified as Soni and Gurleen, sustained severe leg injuries and were rushed to PGI Hospital for treatment.

Police reached the accident site and arrested the Porsche driver, seizing the vehicle. A case has been registered under sections related to reckless driving, negligence, and road safety violations.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Porsche is registered in the name of Sanjeev, a resident of Sector 21, Chandigarh. Authorities are now probing the circumstances leading to the accident, including the possibility of overspeeding and reckless driving.
