Five members of a family died after they were allegedly burnt alive by villagers in Bihar's Purnea over suspcision of practicising witchcraft. Police have recovered their charred bodies from the village and arrested three people in connection with the brutal murder.
Pankaj Kumar Sharma, SDPO Sadar Purnea, said that the police received a call about the incident at around 5:00 AM on Monday. The caller, a minor named Sonu Kumar, informed that the members of Oraon community assaulted his family and burnt them alive over suspicion of black magic, news agency ANI reported.
The police then reached the village and launched an investigation during which they discovered that five people, identified as Babulal Oraon, Sita Devi, Manjit Oraon, Aranaia Devi, and Kakto, were missing. Later, their charred bodies were recovered.
Further probe revealed that the child of one villager named Ramdev Oraon had died three days ago, and the villagers linked it to the family, suspecting they indulged in black magic to kill the child, SDPO Sharma said.
Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X, where he lashed out at the government over the collapsed law and order in the state.
"In Purnia, 5 members of the same family were burned alive and killed. Due to DK Tax, anarchy is at its peak in Bihar, DGP/CS helpless, law and order collapsed," he wrote in Hindi.
"Day before yesterday in Siwan, 3 people were killed in a massacre. In recent days, 3 died in a massacre in Buxar. In Bhojpur, 3 died in a massacre," Yadav further wrote citing similar incidents in the state.
Taking a jibe at CM Nitish Kumar, Yadav said: "Criminals alert, Chief Minister unconscious. Corrupt party thriving, police defeated."
