Four members of a family, including a couple, their five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, were found dead at their house in Karnataka's Bengaluru, officials said on Monday.

According to the police, Anup Kumar (38) and his wife Rakhi (35) poisoned their children before hanging themselves at their rented house in RMV 2nd Stage area in Bengaluru.

All family members were natives of Uttar Pradesh and Anup had been working as a software consultant in a private firm in the city for the last two years.

The discovery was made on Monday morning when the family's house help arrived for work. Despite repeated attempts to get a response, there was no answer from inside the house. Concerned, the house help alerted neighbours, who subsequently contacted the police.

Upon entering the residence, authorities found the lifeless bodies of the couple and their children.

The cause of the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Shekhar H Tekkannavar said they have informed the relatives of Anup Kumar.

A case has been registered and further investigation into the matter is underway.
