At least 31 people were killed, and 169 were injured after a suspected suicide blast took place at a religious centre in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

According to the local reports, an explosion rocked the Tarlai Imambargah, a Shiite mosque in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital. The attack occurred during the two-day official visit of Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Police teams and rescue workers rushed to the spot and began relief operations. Pakistani newspaper Dawn had earlier reported that at least 80 people were injured in the blast.

Hospital authorities declared an emergency following the explosion. The injured were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the Polyclinic Hospital for treatment.

Several videos circulating online show scenes of chaos at the site, with people seen running in panic. Officials present at the spot were also seen trying to control the situation and assist the injured. Islamabad Capital Territory Police Spokesperson Taqi Jawad said it was too soon to ascertain the nature of the blast and forensics teams would need to determine whether it was a suicide or a planted bomb.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, and asked authorities to ensure the provision of best medical care to the wounded persons, who were arriving at the city’s different hospitals.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry strongly condemned the attack, saying, “Such acts of terrorism cannot dampen the morale of the nation. The need of the hour is that we all stand united for peace, tolerance, and stability, and express solidarity with law enforcement agencies."

While no group claimed responsibility for the explosion, suspicion is likely to fall on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or the Islamic State groups, which have been blamed for previous attacks on Shiite worshippers, a minority in the country. The latest attack comes nearly a week after security forces clashed with Baloch separatists and killed around 216 militants.

This incident took place nearly three months after a suicide blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad killed 12 people and injured 30 people in November 2025.
