Kolkata's Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital, one of the city's largest super-specialty government medical facilities, has achieved a remarkable feat by performing over 200 surgeries in just five days, officials said.

A team of over 30 doctors, including Director Manimoy Banerjee, Dr Abhimanyu Basu, and Dr Diptendra Sarkar, worked together to perform 35 to 40 operations daily.

According to officials, Professor Dr Abhimanyu Basu, Head of the Department of Surgery and Laparoscopy, and Dr Diptendra Sarkar spearheaded the special drive.

Dr Diptendra Sarkar said, "We wanted to set an example for others. This is how work should be done. All the doctors, wanted these surgeries to be done quickly".

"We were seeing that many surgeries were pending. Thousands of people come to this hospital every day for treatment. As a result, there was a delay in fixing the surgery date in that case," Dr Siraj Ahmed, part of the drive, said.

"Earlier, if there were too many, we would do 10 surgeries a day. But now we have decided among ourselves that we can do more. And that is what we are doing. This time, we have done more than 200 surgeries in 5 days," he added.

The hospital's achievement has been well received by the patients' relatives, and many of them hope that this trend continues to improve the state of government hospitals in the future as well. SSKM Hospital is also set to establish a cancer care hub in collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital, further enhancing its medical facilities, officials added.

All the surgeries were successful.
