1 dead, 8 hospitalised after gas leak at pharma company in Andhra

Fire department said that toxic gas mixed with hydrochloric acid and chlorine leaked from the Tagoor Laboratories in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli on Tuesday afternoon.

At least one person died, and eight others were hospitalised following a gas leak from a pharma company's laboratory in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district.

According to the fire department, toxic gas mixed with hydrochloric acid and chlorine leaked from the Tagoor Laboratories in Anakapalli's Parawada on Tuesday afternoon. At least 11 workers who were at the laboratory fell ill and were rushed to the hospital.

District Fire Officer P Nageswara Rao said while one person died due to inhalation of toxic gas while undergoing treatment, others have been admitted to different hospitals.

He added that the laboratory compound was no longer at risk following the gas leak.

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed concern over the gas leak and urged the government to provide proper compensation for the kin of the deceased. He also said that the government should ensure proper treatment for the people who are hospitalised.
