In a sharp escalation of regional diplomatic tensions, Turkey has formally issued an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to reports, the warrant—announced by Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek—stems from an ongoing investigation into the Israeli military’s interception of an activist aid flotilla bound for Gaza. Ankara has simultaneously requested an official “red notice" from Interpol to alert international law enforcement agencies.
The legal action centres on the military interception of aid vessels attempting to breach the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The Incident: Turkish prosecutors initiated criminal proceedings following the naval boarding and detention of international activists aboard Gaza-bound supply ships.
The Charges: The Istanbul prosecutor’s office has levelled charges including genocide, crimes against humanity, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and intentional infliction of bodily harm.
Scope of Warrants: Beyond the Israeli Prime Minister, the legal proceedings target multiple senior Israeli officials involved in authorising and executing the maritime interception.
The move marks a significant intensification of Turkey’s judicial campaign against Israel’s leadership. Turkish officials emphasised that the government will continue to pursue all available legal avenues on behalf of affected activists and Palestinian civilians.
The latest court action follows previous legal steps taken by Turkish authorities, who have repeatedly accused Israeli forces of severe human rights violations and illegal detentions in international waters.
While an Interpol red notice serves as a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a target, its implementation remains subject to member states’ internal judicial policies and diplomatic ties.
Israel has firmly rejected all accusations from Turkish courts, maintaining that its naval blockades and interceptions are lawful operations designed to prevent unauthorised maritime transit into combat zones.
The issuance of the warrant is expected to further strain already frayed diplomatic relations between Ankara and Jerusalem, while adding to the broader international legal scrutiny facing Israeli officials globally.
