Russia gives US super-secret JFK files with map that could shake up world

Russia has handed over a super-secret Soviet-era file to the US on President JF Kennedy's assassination. The file has a map of a Cold War-era-planned Peace Bridge to connect the two countries. Why did Moscow release the JFK file now, and can it shake up geopolitics?

Russia has handed over a classified file on American President JFK's assassination to the US. While American experts are rushing to translate the over 350-page file, a map of a planned bridge connecting the US to USSR (now Russia) in the secret document might end up reshaping geopolitics and global alliances. That's because it reveals that the Cold War rivals planned a bridge connecting the two countries, and has sparked calls for a Trump-Putin bridge-tunnel link.

While scanning through the pages, one comes across a 'Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge', which connects the continents are power rivals across the narrow Bearing Sea. On the map is a handwritten note, "Could and should be built between Alaska and Russia. At Once."

The document was shared online by Representative from Florida, Anna Paulina Luna. The file could shed light on Soviet secret agency KGB's insights into JFK's assassination in 1963 during the height of the Cold War.

"The following report (referring to) the JFK assassination was delivered to me by the Ambassador from Russia and is now made accessible to the American public at the link below," wrote Luna, while sharing the JFK assassination document on X. "While experts are actively authenticating the legitimacy of these documents, at this time they are believed to be authentic," added Representative Luna, who is a part of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Russian media outlet, Sputnik, called the document "the Kremlin's official findings on the JFK assassination".

President John F Kennedy or JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Kennedy was struck by two bullets, one in the upper back and a fatal shot to the head.

The official investigation, led by the Warren Commission (1964), concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine veteran who had briefly defected to the Soviet Union, acted alone and killed JFK. However, alternative theories suggested the possibility that the CIA, the Mafia, or even elements within the US government were involved.

Mystery still surrounds JFK's assassination even after over six decades.

The timing of the handing over of the classified document on JFK's assassination by Russia to the US is significant.

US President Donald Trump, trying to end the Ukraine-Russia war, hosted his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in August in Anchorage, Alaska. They are set to meet again in Budapest within the next two weeks.

Alaska is the point in the US that is closest to Russia. It was, in fact, a part of Tsarist Russia and sold to the US before the USSR took shape. At their closest point, across the Bering Strait, two islands—Little Diomede (US) and Big Diomede (Russia)—are only about four kilometres apart.

Putin's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev shared an image of the planned Kennedy–Khrushchev World Peace Bridge from the JFK files on X.

"With modern The Boring Company technology, this could become a Putin-Trump tunnel connecting Eurasia and the Americas for < $8 billion," Dmitriev wrote on X, referring to Elon Musk's tunnel-construction company.

While reacting to those excited by a proposal to connect the US and Russia, the Putin aide suggested "the tunnel could be for trains and cars".

"Elon Musk, imagine connecting the US and Russia. The Americas and Afro-Eurasia with the Putin-Trump Tunnel—a 70-mile link symbolising unity. Traditional costs are $65B+, but [Musk's] Boring Company's tech could reduce it to less than $8 billion. Let's build a future together!" he added in a separate post.

The plan of a tunnel connecting the continents has excited geopolitical experts and transportation for decades, and in 2016, The Schiller Institute think tank published a report—Beijing to Seattle Through the Bering Strait—after a Global Chinatown Conference.

"The Bering Strait tunnel will be one of the greatest symbols of the coming end of British imperial geopolitical operations, when the United States joins Russia, China, and India for a new era of peace through development," it said.

Kirill Dmitriev, while sharing the map, proposed a bold vision: the Putin-Trump Tunnel.

Mario Nawfal, an internet personality who posts on geopolitics, said, "Some are reviving the idea, calling it a potential Putin–Trump Tunnel connecting Eurasia and the Americas."

"Could a Cold War dream actually unite the two continents," he asked, suggesting that the Peace Bridge was proposed by JFK himself.

In another post, Nawfal speculated on the timing of the handover of the document. "Why is Putin giving US conservatives access to explosive Cold War-era secrets, at this moment?"

The US had sought the KGB files in the 90s but couldn't manage to access them. However, the Russians gave a summary of the files to the Clinton administration, according to a New York Post report.

"In the '90s, the files had a price," Gerald Posner, author of a bestseller on JFK's assassination, told the NY Post, suggesting that now there were no more secrets. "I think that the Russians providing them is a distraction from what's going on in Ukraine."

Jefferson Morley, who is set to help the Republicans decode the document, told The NY Post that one needed to be cautious. "Is this a propaganda play? Could be."

"Clearly, they [the Russians] see some advantage in putting this out there... We have to be really careful," Morley said.

While it will need some time to analyse what the latest JFK files contain, the discovery of the Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge plan, which is being rebranded as the Trump-Putin Tunnel, if acted upon, has the potential to shake up geopolitics, by changing allies and alignments.
