Legendary mountaineer Nirmal "Nims" Purja, the man who redefined what was thought possible in high-altitude climbing, has died in a tragic avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. His expedition company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed the news on Saturday, saying it was with "profound sadness and immense heartbreak" that it announced his death.
The company also confirmed that the remaining nine members of the expedition did not survive the avalanche, making it one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in the Karakoram in recent years.
The avalanche struck Broad Peak on Thursday during the expedition. Rescue efforts were carried out in extremely difficult conditions, but hopes of finding survivors diminished as search operations progressed.
Earlier, Pakistani authorities had confirmed the recovery of the bodies of three climbers from the team, American Mallory Geis, Oman's Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, and Nepal's Pur Bahadur Gurung.
Born in Nepal, Purja was regarded as one of the greatest mountaineers of his generation. A former British Army Gurkha and UK Special Forces soldier, he rose to global fame in 2019 after climbing all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks in just six months and six days—shattering the previous record and accomplishing a feat many experts believed was impossible.
His remarkable journey was later chronicled in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, inspiring millions across the world with his message of resilience, determination and pushing beyond perceived human limits.
Over the years, Purja became synonymous with modern mountaineering, not only for setting records but also for leading high-risk rescue missions and championing Nepalese climbers on the global stage. His achievements reshaped the world of extreme climbing and earned him admiration far beyond the mountaineering community.
With his passing, the climbing world has lost one of its most fearless pioneers, a man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of adventurers long after his final ascent.
