February 28, 2026 — The day Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was hacked to death following the missile attacks launched by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets. However, the question that still remains is: How did Israel manage to kill Khamenei?

Israel infiltrated Tehran’s extensive traffic camera network to monitor the bodyguards of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials, the Financial Times reported, citing two sources familiar with the situation.

Iran’s cameras, which are believed to be part of the state’s surveillance system, are used to identify and track protesters and opponents of the regime. However, Israel’s Mossad managed to turn these cameras against the Iranian regime.

According to the FT report, Israel gained access to the cameras years ago and found that one particular camera was angled in a way that it showed where members of Khamenei’s security team parked their cars.

Through the cameras, Israeli intelligence built files on the guards’ addresses, work schedules, and who they were assigned to protect.

In addition to this, Israel and the US also disrupted cellular service on Tehran’s Pasteur Street, where Khamenei was assassinated, so those trying to reach the bodyguards and deliver possible warnings would receive busy signals, the report suggested.

“We knew Tehran like we know Jerusalem," an Israeli intelligence official tells the Financial Times.“And when you know [a place] as well as you know the street you grew up on, you notice a single thing that’s out of place," the official added. It has been learnt that Israel used AI tools and algorithms to sort through mountains of data it was amassing on Iran’s leadership and their movements. The data allowed them to track Khamenei to the Saturday meeting where the Supreme Leader met with an end.Additionally, the United States’ CIA also had a human source who provided key intelligence, report suggested.
