India to restart cargo flights from Delhi, Amritsar to Kabul soon as ties reset

India has reactivated air cargo corridors on the Kabul–Delhi and Kabul–Amritsar routes, signalling renewed trade engagement with Afghanistan. The move came during Taliban Trade Minister Azizi's India visit, where both sides discussed boosting economic and connectivity ties.

India is set to resume air cargo services with Afghanistan, marking a significant step in the renewed engagement between the two sides. The announcement came on Friday during the visit of Afghanistan’s Taliban Trade Minister Al-Haj Nooruddin Azizi to New Delhi.

Anand Prakash, an official from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed that the air freight corridor on the Kabul–Delhi and Kabul–Amritsar routes has been reactivated. “I am pleased to announce that the air freight corridor on the Kabul-Delhi sector and Kabul-Amritsar routes have been activated and cargo flights on these sectors will come very soon,” he said.

The move signals a revival of direct trade connectivity that had stalled in recent years. The reactivation of these corridors is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods between the two countries and boost commercial ties.

The announcement came after the Taliban minister Azizi met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the national capital as part of the Taliban leader's five-day official visit to the country.

During the meeting, both leaders held discussions on strengthening bilateral trade, connectivity, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The External Affairs Minister, in a post on X, said that the two ministers explored ways to enhance economic cooperation and facilitate development initiatives, as well as reiterating India's continued support for the welfare and development of the Afghan people.

The Afghan Minister arrived in India on Wednesday for his official visit. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) extended a warm welcome to the visiting dignitary, whose visit is aimed at bolstering bilateral trade and investment ties between the two nations.

This marks one of the highest-level visits from the Taliban government to India since their takeover of Kabul in August 2021.

Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, earlier concluded a six-day visit to India in October 2025, marking the highest-level engagement between New Delhi and the Taliban regime since the 2021 takeover.
