The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the breach of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Tripura's Agartala on Monday during protests against the arrest of a Hindu monk in Bangladesh.

This statement comes just hours after several people took out a massive rally around the Bangladeshi mission in Tripura, protesting against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh and also against the string of attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country.

Over 50 protesters reportedly entered the premises of the Bangladeshi mission in Agartala on Monday, news agency PTI reported.

"The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances," the ministry said in a statement.

It added that the government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the High Commission of Bangladesh in Delhi and other Deputy and Assistant High Commissions across the country.

Earlier, the MEA had attacked Bangladesh over targeted attacks on Hindus on November 29, saying the increasing incidents of violence against minorities cannot merely be dismissed as "media exaggerations".

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had called upon the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities.

"India has consistently and strongly raised with the Bangladesh government the threats and targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities. We are concerned about the surge of extremist rhetoric. Increasing incidents of violence and provocation cannot be dismissed merely as media exaggerations. We call upon Bangladesh to take steps for the protection of minorities," Jaiswal said.

Last week, Bangladesh called India's charges "unfounded" while saying they do not reflect the harmony that exists among the people of all faiths in the country.
