Frank Caprio, 'America's nicest judge' known for viral moments, dies of cancer

Judge Frank Caprio won global admiration for his compassion in court, blending humour with empathy on Caught in Providence, inspiring millions worldwide with his humanity, fairness, and belief in goodness.

Judge Frank Caprio, known worldwide for his compassion and humility in the courtroom, has died at the age of 88. The Rhode Island judge, who rose to international fame through social media clips showcasing his empathetic approach to justice, passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Only hours before his death, Caprio had posted an emotional message on Instagram, thanking fans for their prayers. “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” he said.

In a statement, the Caprio family made public his peaceful demise, describing him as a man who was very strong in believing in people's goodness. “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

The family also remembered him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, adding that his legacy will live on.

Caprio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2023 and made the announcement public on Facebook. Despite the challenges, he underwent six months of chemotherapy and five cycles of radiation therapy.

In May 2024, he marked the closing of his treatment by ringing the iconic bell of healing at the Miami Cancer Institute and receiving a standing ovation from loved ones and medical staff.

Caprio initially became known for his popular long-time local TV series Caught in Providence, which later became popular online. His soft humour and ethical decisions made him a world favorite, with millions of fans admiring his humanity.
