At least seven people were killed and 25 others injured when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest among guests at a wedding ceremony in northwest Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday.

The attack occurred at the residence of Noor Alam Mehsud, a pro-government community leader in Dera Ismail Khan district, local police said. The blast caused panic at the crowded venue, with debris and bloodstains scattered across the area.

The guests were dancing when the attack occurred, and the powerful blast caused the roof to collapse, hampering rescue efforts and making it difficult to reach those trapped beneath the debris. Officials added that among those killed was a ‘good Talib’, a term used to refer to a former militant who has surrendered to the state, and the rest were his relatives.

Police said the dead and injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where several of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition. Security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify any accomplices, news agency AP reported.

According to initial reports, a peace committee leader, Waheedullah Mehsud, alias Jigri Mehsud, was among the dead.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), is suspected to be behind the suicide bombing. The outfit has carried out numerous attacks in Pakistan in recent years.

Earlier this month, armed assailants had killed four members of a peace committee in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district. In November 2025, seven people were killed when a peace committee office was attacked, also in the same province.
