Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups appears to be having a much tougher post-theatrical journey than expected.
The Geetu Mohandas directorial, which arrived in theatres amid massive anticipation, is now reportedly struggling to command the kind of OTT price its makers had hoped for. According to a report by The Indian Express, the film’s digital rights remain unsold, with the latest reported offer said to be around ₹30 crore — a dramatic distance from the ₹200 crore valuation reportedly expected for Yash’s OTT rights.
Before its theatrical release, Toxic was positioned as one of the biggest South Indian films, backed by Yash’s enormous popularity following the KGF franchise.
That star power reportedly translated into lofty expectations for its digital rights as well. However, the film's box-office performance has changed the equation.
Reports now suggest that the OTT valuation has dropped sharply, with platforms reportedly offering around ₹30 crore for the digital rights. Importantly, the rights are reportedly still unsold, meaning ₹30 crore is an offer being discussed rather than a confirmed final deal.
Toxic was expected to be a major commercial event. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the film stars Yash alongside Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth.
The movie reportedly carried a production budget of around ₹500 crore, making the stakes exceptionally high.
Despite a strong opening, the film reportedly witnessed a sharp slowdown amid mixed reactions and negative word-of-mouth. That theatrical performance appears to have affected its perceived value in the streaming market.
And that is where the ₹30 crore figure becomes particularly significant.
For an expensive star-driven film that was reportedly hoping to command a ₹200 crore-plus OTT valuation, such a drastic reduction represents a major commercial reality check.
The OTT setback comes after Toxic struggled to maintain the momentum generated by its opening.
The film's performance has been particularly closely watched because of Yash's post-KGF positioning. While the actor remains one of the biggest names in Indian cinema, Toxic was expected to deliver at a scale matching his growing pan-India stature.
Recent reports have painted a mixed picture of its theatrical performance, with the film crossing ₹330 crore worldwide but simultaneously facing a significant slowdown in daily collections.
The arrival of competing releases has also added pressure to the film's theatrical run.
For big-budget Indian films, theatrical revenue is only one part of the recovery strategy.
Satellite rights, music rights and especially OTT rights can help producers recover a substantial portion of their investment after the theatrical window.
That makes a strong digital deal particularly important for a film carrying a reported ₹500 crore production cost.
If the reported ₹30 crore offer becomes the final value, it would be a huge gap from the valuation reportedly expected before the film's release.
Yash's KGF films transformed him into a pan-India superstar, making Toxic one of the most anticipated Kannada films in recent years.
The film also had a high-profile ensemble cast and Geetu Mohandas at the helm, raising expectations even further.
But Toxic also represented a significant departure in tone and storytelling from the mass-action formula associated with KGF. Its theatrical response appears to have demonstrated just how difficult it can be to convert star power and a massive production scale into guaranteed commercial success.
For now, the biggest question is whether the makers can hold out for a better OTT deal or whether market realities will force them to accept a much lower valuation.
