The passing of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle at the age of 92 has left the Indian film and music industry in deep mourning, with tributes pouring in from across generations of artists and fans alike. Among the first to express his grief was superstar Salman Khan, who shared an emotional note remembering the icon whose voice defined decades of Indian cinema.

Taking to X, Salman called her demise a “huge loss for Indian music,” writing that her voice was truly irreplaceable. “Heartbroken to hear about Asha ji… your songs will continue to inspire generations,” he said, alongside a photograph of the singer.

A wave of condolences followed from some of the biggest names in the industry. Shah Rukh Khan shared a personal memory, describing her voice as one of the pillars of Indian cinema that would “resonate for centuries.” He also recalled the warmth and blessings she had always extended to him.

Actor Priyanka Chopra posted a nostalgic throwback, reflecting on how Asha Bhosle’s music formed the emotional backdrop of everyday life for millions. She wrote that the loss feels deeply personal, “like losing a piece of childhood, of home”, highlighting how the singer’s voice was woven into moments of joy, heartbreak, and celebration.

Others, including Akshay Kumar and Kajol, also paid tribute, underscoring the sheer scale of her influence on Indian music and cinema.

Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 after battling health complications, including cardiac and respiratory issues. She had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital before her demise.

On Monday, her mortal remains were placed at her residence in Lower Parel, where family, friends, and members of the film fraternity gathered to pay their last respects. Draped in the Indian tricolour, the singer was accorded state honours, a rare recognition that reflects her unparalleled contribution to the arts. Her final rites are scheduled to take place at Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar.

Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle’s journey began at a young age, but it was in the 1950s that she carved a distinct identity for herself. Over an extraordinary career spanning nearly eight decades, she recorded more than 11,000 songs in multiple languages. From classical compositions and ghazals to peppy cabaret numbers and pop tracks, her versatility set her apart.

Songs like “Dum Maro Dum,” “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” and “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” remain timeless, continuing to find new audiences even today.

Beyond the industry, fans across social media platforms have been sharing clips, vinyl collections, and personal memories associated with her music. Many described her songs as “the soundtrack of their lives,” while younger listeners acknowledged discovering her legacy through remixes and digital platforms. Hashtags dedicated to her name have been trending since the news broke, reflecting the emotional connect she held across generations.

As India bids farewell to one of its most iconic voices, what remains undeniable is that Asha Bhosle’s music will continue to echo, not just in cinema halls or playlists, but in the collective memory of a nation.
