Indian cinema had a big awards night on Tuesday as the 72nd National Film Awards were presented at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, with President Droupadi Murmu conferring the honours.
And this year came with a major change: the ceremony was held outside New Delhi for the first time in decades, against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity.
Two generations, one award.
Kartik Aaryan and Malayalam cinema legend Mammootty shared the Best Actor in a Leading Role honour.
Kartik won for his performance as Paralympic champion Murlikant Petkar in Chandu Champion, marking his first National Film Award.
Mammootty was honoured for his performance in Bramayugam, adding another National Award to his already celebrated career.
Yami Gautam Dhar won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Article 370.
The film had an even bigger night, taking home the Best Feature Film award as well. It also won Best Music Direction, making it one of the major winners of the ceremony.
Actor-turned-director Randeep Hooda added another milestone to his career, winning the Best Debut Film of a Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognising his contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than five decades.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar Periasamy won Best Director for Amaran, while Kalki 2898 AD won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Dhanush also received a Special Mention for Captain Miller, while Raayan was named Best Tamil Film.
The winners had been announced in July, but Tuesday’s ceremony officially brought the stars together to receive their honours.
With the National Film Awards now moving beyond Delhi, the 72nd edition wasn't just about who won it also marked a change in where India's biggest cinema honours are celebrated.
Different languages. Different industries. One stage. And plenty of National Award flex.
