Padma Shri awardee, renowned educationist and former Governor D. Y. Patil passed away on Tuesday at his residence in Kolhapur after a prolonged illness. He was 91. His death marks the end of a remarkable journey that reshaped higher education in India while spanning public service, healthcare and sports.
Fondly known as "Dada", Patil served as the Governor of Bihar, Tripura and West Bengal during his distinguished public career. However, it was his contribution to education that became his defining legacy.
Over four decades, Patil built the D. Y. Patil Group into one of India's most recognised educational institutions, establishing universities, engineering colleges, medical colleges, dental colleges, hospitals and research centres across Maharashtra and beyond. His vision was to make quality education accessible while creating world-class infrastructure for learning and healthcare
Beginning with the establishment of the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai in 1983, his educational initiatives expanded into multidisciplinary universities that today educate thousands of students every year. His institutions also played a significant role in advancing medical education and healthcare services in the country.
Beyond education, Patil remained closely associated with sports development. The D. Y. Patil name became synonymous with world-class sporting infrastructure, including cricket stadiums and sports academies that have hosted international events.
His contributions to education and philanthropy earned him the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, while his tenure as Governor reflected decades of public service.
