GATE 2026: Strict entry checks and banned items list for exam day

Getting to the exam centre ahead of time and following every directive matters for GATE 2026—security and rules will be in full effect throughout the process.

Candidates registered for GATE 2026 are subject to extensive checks at entry. Security staff will scrutinise items—permitted and banned—with particular attention. Devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, calculators, plus all forms of study material, including bags and books, remain forbidden inside the centre. Possession of these can result in being barred from the exam.

At the venue, candidates receive rough sheets for calculations or note-taking. Before beginning any work, candidates must write both their name and registration number on each sheet, as outlined in the official guidelines. Invigilators observe these actions, and compliance with their instructions is required throughout the examination.

Bringing a physical printout of the GATE 2026 admit card, specifically on an A4 sheet, is mandatory. Details on the card—including the candidate's image—must be easily legible; unclear or low-quality printouts do not satisfy requirements. This document is not optional for entry.

A valid, original photo ID must also accompany the admit card. Accepted forms are Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, driving license, or PAN card, limited to the specific ID presented during registration. No photocopies or digital scans will be accepted at the door. Failure to present the correct identification may prevent access to the exam.

All instructions printed on the admit card should be reviewed in detail before arrival—some may indicate if a recent passport-sized photo is needed. Verification of these requirements before leaving is recommended.

GATE 2026 operates two shifts: forenoon (9:30 am – 12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm – 5:30 pm). Candidates must check their assigned session and location as specified on the admit card. Arriving a minimum of 60 to 90 minutes before the stated reporting time is necessary to avoid delays or complications.

Candidates must undergo biometric verification and have their documents checked before entering the examination room. Those lacking required documentation or arriving after the cutoff risk being denied entry. No personal electronic devices—including calculators—are permitted at workstations; a virtual calculator is supplied on the exam computer.

An at-a-glance checklist for GATE 2026:- Bring a printed A4 admit card with a clearly visible photo.- Carry the specific, original photo ID used at registration.- Leave electronic devices, bags, and reading material at home.- Arrive at the centre 60-90 minutes ahead of reporting time.- Comply with the invigilator's instructions and all posted rules at the centre.
