Tesla Mumbai Showroom Launch: Tesla marked its official entry into the Indian market on Tuesday with the opening of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the inauguration and expressed hope about Tesla’s future plans for electric vehicle manufacturing and Research and Development in India.

“We hope that Tesla will also plan a manufacturing plant and a Research and Development unit in India as well," said Fadnavis during his address at the launch event.

“This is more than just an inauguration — it’s a statement that Tesla has chosen the right city and state," said the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

“Maharashtra is the entrepreneurial capital of India, and Mumbai represents innovation and sustainability. Tesla is not just a car; it’s about design and innovation — that’s why it’s loved across the world."

Reflecting on his first experience with the EV brand, he added, “In 2015, during a visit to the US, I had my first ride in a Tesla and thought India should have such mobility. It took 10 years, but we’ve finally made it happen. I’m confident everyone will appreciate the vehicle."

Despite ongoing speculation about Tesla’s long-term plans in India, the company has not indicated any intent to manufacture vehicles locally at this time.

The company has also revealed the prices for its electric vehicles, with the Model Y’s on-road price listed at ₹61 lakh. The rear-wheel drive version is priced at ₹59.89 lakh.

Last Friday, Tesla had hinted at the launch through a post on its India-focused X account, stating “Coming soon," along with a graphic suggesting its planned debut in July 2025.

India’s recently announced EV policy, which includes reduced import duties and incentives for global electric vehicle manufacturers, may further support Tesla as it entered the market.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk discussed possible collaborations in technology and innovation during a phone call in April, following an in-person meeting in February during PM Modi’s visit to the United States.

With its first showroom now open in Mumbai, Tesla has officially entered one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets, aiming to establish a presence for its premium electric vehicles.
