India’s Retail Inflation Eases To 1.54% In September, Lowest Since June 2017

India's retail inflation in September 2025 dropped to 1.54 percent, the lowest since June 2017, with food inflation also hitting its lowest since December 2018.

CPI September 2025: The retail Inflation of India in September, 2025 stood at 1.54%, according to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Monday. It is the lowest after June, 2017. There is decrease of 53 basis points in headline inflation of September, 2025 in comparison to August, 2025.

The decrease in headline and food inflation is mainly attributed to favorable base effect and to decline in inflation of Vegetables, Oil and fats, Fruits, Pulses and products, Cereal and products, Egg, Fuel and light etc.The food inflation rate for rural and urban stood in September stood at 2.17 per cent and -2.47 per cent, respectively. A decrease of 164 basis points is observed in food inflation in September, 2025 in comparison to August, 2025. The food inflation in September, 2025 is the lowest after December, 2018.

Among major states, Kerala recorded the highest combined inflation rate at 9.05%, followed by Jammu & Kashmir (4.38%), Karnataka (3.33%), Punjab (3.06%), and Tamil Nadu (2.77%).

Housing: 3.98% (up from 3.09% in August)

  • Year-on-year Housing inflation rate for the month ofSeptember, 2025 is 3.98% (Provisional). Corresponding inflation rate for the month of August, 2025 was 3.09%. The housing index is compiled for urban sector only.

Health: 4.34% (slightly down from 4.40%)

  • Year-on-year Health inflation rate for the month ofSeptember, 2025 is 4.34% (Provisional). Corresponding inflation rate for the month of August, 2025 was 4.40%. It is combined health inflation for both rural and urban sector.

Education: 3.44% (down from 3.60%)

  • Year-on-year Education inflation rate for the month ofSeptember, 2025 is 3.44% (Provisional). Corresponding inflation rate for the month of August, 2025 was 3.60%. It is combined education inflation for both rural and urban sector.

Fuel and Light: 1.98% (down from 2.32%)

  • Year-on-year Fuel & light inflation rate for the month of September, 2025 is 1.98%. Corresponding inflation rate for the month of August, 2025 was 2.32%. It is combined inflation rate for both rural and urban sector.

Transport and Communication: 1.82% (down from 1.94%)
