Aruuhhh's Aarhus| Citizen Junction

From growing up across India to finding an unexpected sense of belonging in Aarhus, Denmark, a young Indian journalist Arundhati Tyagi reflects on home, culture, and discovering a new version of herself abroad.

Arundhati Tyagi

I’ve grown up in different parts of India. My family is from the north, we’ve state-hopped across the west and finally settled into the southern French town of Pondicherry. And before, I knew it, I am up again in the capital city, studying and working for almost 7 years, the EARLY ROMANTIC 20s of my life were spent in New Delhi, growing and evolving. I was pretty content, what more could I want from a country that’s shown me so much of the world through its culture, values and life in general. But how much have you really really seen??

Then, by life’s kindest bestowment of grace, I was selected for the Erasmus Mundus Masters in Journalism, Media and Globalisation. The first year, brought me to Denmark, in a place called Aarhus. I call it Aruuhh’s Aarhus. It’s been hardly 3 weeks since I’ve been here and boy have my horizons broadened. From the stark difference in the study culture, to RAVE partying and the KINDNESS I have been offered, I feel like this place is MINE.

India is mine too, it is HOME but you don’t think about finding new ones, especially around the second phase or the  NOT SO ROMANTIC late 20s when your friends are settling down into marriages and literally MAKING NEW HOMES. Denmark has been so welcoming, so COOL and so easy to belong to. Denmark is easy going, no one is in a rush. The take TAKING IT EASY or the HYGGE very seriously. It’s the most beautiful paradox of culminating EASE into a way of like, AS SERIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE.

I am still discovering parts of me through Aarhus. What it used to be, what it IS and what it is constantly embracing to evolve. I will cherish this experience for a lifetime.

I’ll talk more about life here once I explore MORE than I already have over my blessed time here. But as of now, I have zero complaints, only positive cultural shocks to contribute.
